# AA vs AKs: preflop equity

AA is a big favorite over AKs before the flop: 87.86% to 12.14% equity, counted exactly over every board, with the split by flop type and suit.

If AA and AKs get all the chips in before the flop, AA owns 87.86% of the pot in the long run and AKs owns 12.14%.

## AA against AKs: the numbers

**Exact preflop results for AA against AKs, in percent**

| Hand | Wins | Ties | Loses | Equity |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AA | 87.231 | 1.256 | 11.513 | 87.859 |
| AKs | 11.513 | 1.256 | 87.231 | 12.141 |

Here a pocket pair (AA) meets a suited hand (AKs). One hand holds a card of the same rank as the pair, which removes a card the pair needs and makes the pair a bigger favorite.

This is one of the lopsided matchups: AKs wins only 11.51% of the boards outright. A split pot comes up on 1.26% of boards, so the wins and the equity differ by half of that.

For context, AA sits at number 1 of 169 starting hands and AKs at number 8 when each is run against a random hand.

**Boards behind the percentages: 20,547,648 counted in all**

| Hand | Boards won, about | Boards tied, about | Boards lost, about |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AA | 17,924,000 | 258,000 | 2,366,000 |
| AKs | 2,366,000 | 258,000 | 17,924,000 |

12 specific deals times 1,712,304 boards gives the exact total. The won, tied and lost counts are approximations from the five-decimal percentages, rounded to the nearest thousand.

**AA against AKs read as odds**

| Hand | Equity as odds (to 1) | Wins one deal in | Loses one deal in | Pot odds needed to call (to 1) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AA | 7.237 | 1.146 | 8.686 | 0.138 |
| AKs | 0.138 | 8.686 | 1.146 | 7.237 |

The final column gives the least the pot must offer for each unit called for a call to break even at this equity.

## Who is ahead on which flops

Break the boards down by their first three cards and AA is strongest on low rainbow flops (nine high or lower) (94.89%) and weakest on monotone flops (77.66%). AA stays ahead on all five textures, but the swing between them is large, so how the flop looks matters a great deal.

**AA against AKs by flop texture, in percent**

| Flop | Share of flops | AA wins | Ties | AKs wins | AA equity |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Rainbow, ten or higher | 23.011 | 89.840 | 1.020 | 9.140 | 90.350 |
| Rainbow, nine or lower | 7.771 | 93.487 | 2.801 | 3.712 | 94.887 |
| Two-tone | 46.236 | 85.789 | 1.326 | 12.885 | 86.452 |
| Monotone | 5.151 | 76.490 | 2.339 | 21.171 | 77.660 |
| Paired | 17.831 | 87.983 | 0.393 | 11.624 | 88.180 |

Rainbow flops have three suits, two-tone flops repeat one suit, monotone flops are all one suit, and paired flops repeat a rank.

## Compared with a random hand

The table below sets each hand against its own random-hand baseline: a change of +2.66 points for AA, from 85.20%, and -54.91 for AKs, from 67.05%.

**AA and AKs here compared with each against a random hand, in percent**

| Case | Equity here | Against a random hand | Change in points | Times the random-hand equity |

| AKs, two-tone | 13.548 | 67.045 | -53.497 | 0.20207 |
| AKs, monotone | 22.340 | 67.045 | -44.705 | 0.33321 |
| AKs, paired | 11.820 | 67.045 | -55.225 | 0.17630 |

## Does a shared suit matter?

AA and AKs never overlap in suit in a legal deal, so the whole matchup sits in the no-shared-suit row.

**AA against AKs by suit overlap, in percent**

| Deals | Specific deals | Share of deals | AA wins | Ties | AKs wins | AA equity |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Share a suit | 0 | 0.00 | not possible | not possible | not possible | not possible |
| No shared suit | 12 | 100.00 | 87.231 | 1.256 | 11.513 | 87.859 |

## How often this matchup comes up

The class pair covers 12 combinations of specific cards in a fixed seat order, 0.0007% of 1,624,350, and 24 (0.0015%) in either order.

## A worked example

Worked example: both players commit $100, so $200 sits in the middle. Over every board, AA's average share is $175.72 (a gain of $75.72) and AKs' is $24.28 (a loss of $75.72).

Scaled to 1,000 deals, that is roughly 872 wins for AA, 115 for AKs and 13 chopped pots.

## The same matchup from the other side

AKs against AA adds nothing new: it is 12.14% for AKs and 87.86% for AA, the same figures reversed.

## How this was computed

The figures are counted, not estimated: 1,712,304 boards for every suit pattern of the 12 specific deals, with both seven-card hands compared each time. Equity gives half a win for a tie. For the flop rows, a board is counted once under each of the ten flops inside it.
