# AQs vs KQs: preflop equity

AQs is a big favorite over KQs before the flop: 71.42% to 28.58% equity, counted exactly over every board, with the split by flop type and suit.

The exact count puts AQs at 71.42% and KQs at 28.58% when the two hands see all five board cards.

## AQs against KQs: the numbers

**Exact preflop results for AQs against KQs, in percent**

| Hand | Wins | Ties | Loses | Equity |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AQs | 70.848 | 1.139 | 28.013 | 71.418 |
| KQs | 28.013 | 1.139 | 70.848 | 28.582 |

AQs and KQs are both suited hands. The two hands share a rank, and the one with the better other card dominates: it wins most kicker battles when that shared rank hits.

A lead of 42.84 points is large but not decisive: KQs still takes about 280 of every 1,000 deals. Ties are part of the picture: 1.14% of boards end in a split pot, and each side counts that as half a win.

Among the 169 starting hands, AQs is number 10 and KQs is number 16 by strength against a random hand.

**Boards behind the percentages: 20,547,648 counted in all**

| Hand | Boards won, about | Boards tied, about | Boards lost, about |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AQs | 14,558,000 | 234,000 | 5,756,000 |
| KQs | 5,756,000 | 234,000 | 14,558,000 |

Exact total: 12 deals times 1,712,304 boards. The other three counts come from the five-decimal percentages and are rounded to the nearest thousand, so read them as approximate.

**AQs against KQs read as odds**

| Hand | Equity as odds (to 1) | Wins one deal in | Loses one deal in | Pot odds needed to call (to 1) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AQs | 2.499 | 1.411 | 3.570 | 0.400 |
| KQs | 0.400 | 3.570 | 1.411 | 2.499 |

The last column is the break-even price: the pot odds a call needs to offer, as a ratio of pot to call.

## Who is ahead on which flops

Across the five flop textures AQs' equity moves by 19.86 points, from 64.21% on monotone flops to 84.07% on low rainbow flops (nine high or lower). AQs stays ahead on all five textures, but the swing between them is large, so how the flop looks matters a great deal.

**AQs against KQs by flop texture, in percent**

| Flop | Share of flops | AQs wins | Ties | KQs wins | AQs equity |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Rainbow, ten or higher | 23.138 | 68.849 | 0.743 | 30.408 | 69.220 |
| Rainbow, nine or lower | 7.771 | 83.451 | 1.232 | 15.317 | 84.067 |
| Two-tone | 46.543 | 69.658 | 0.762 | 29.580 | 70.039 |
| Monotone | 5.215 | 62.469 | 3.475 | 34.056 | 64.206 |
| Paired | 17.333 | 73.583 | 1.935 | 24.482 | 74.550 |

A rainbow flop shows three suits, a two-tone flop repeats one suit, a monotone flop is a single suit, and a paired flop repeats a rank.

## How this was computed

Each figure is a complete count over boards. Take the 12 specific deals, group them by suit pattern, deal all 1,712,304 boards against each, and compare the two seven-card hands. Equity counts a tie as half a win; the flop rows use every one of a board's ten flops.
