# ATs vs A4s: preflop equity

ATs is a big favorite over A4s before the flop: 67.65% to 32.35% equity, counted exactly over every board, with the split by flop type and suit.

Dealt all in against each other, ATs takes 67.65% of the pot on average and A4s takes the other 32.35%.

## ATs against A4s: the numbers

**Exact preflop results for ATs against A4s, in percent**

| Hand | Wins | Ties | Loses | Equity |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ATs | 62.756 | 9.780 | 27.464 | 67.646 |
| A4s | 27.464 | 9.780 | 62.756 | 32.354 |

Here suited hands face each other, ATs on one side and A4s on the other. The two hands share a rank, and the one with the better other card dominates: it wins most kicker battles when that shared rank hits.

ATs is the clear favorite, though A4s gets there on roughly one board in 3. Ties are part of the picture: 9.78% of boards end in a split pot, and each side counts that as half a win.

The hand ranking puts ATs at 13 and A4s at 35 out of 169 starting hands.

**Boards behind the percentages: 20,547,648 counted in all**

| Hand | Boards won, about | Boards tied, about | Boards lost, about |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ATs | 12,895,000 | 2,010,000 | 5,643,000 |
| A4s | 5,643,000 | 2,010,000 | 12,895,000 |

Exact total: 12 deals times 1,712,304 boards. The other three counts come from the five-decimal percentages and are rounded to the nearest thousand, so read them as approximate.

**ATs against A4s read as odds**

| Hand | Equity as odds (to 1) | Wins one deal in | Loses one deal in | Pot odds needed to call (to 1) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ATs | 2.091 | 1.593 | 3.641 | 0.478 |
| A4s | 0.478 | 3.641 | 1.593 | 2.091 |

In the last column, a pot-to-call ratio at or above the figure makes a call break even or better at this equity.

## Who is ahead on which flops

The flop changes the picture. ATs does best on rainbow flops topped by a ten or better, at 74.10%, and worst on low rainbow flops (nine high or lower), at 56.04%. ATs stays ahead on all five textures, but the swing between them is large, so how the flop looks matters a great deal.

**ATs against A4s by flop texture, in percent**

| Flop | Share of flops | ATs wins | Ties | A4s wins | ATs equity |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Rainbow, ten or higher | 23.867 | 69.896 | 8.409 | 21.695 | 74.101 |
| Rainbow, nine or lower | 7.042 | 54.100 | 3.883 | 42.017 | 56.042 |
| Two-tone | 46.543 | 64.097 | 6.686 | 29.217 | 67.440 |
| Monotone | 5.215 | 58.625 | 7.812 | 33.563 | 62.531 |
| Paired | 17.333 | 54.085 | 22.963 | 22.952 | 65.567 |

Read the flop types this way: rainbow has three suits, two-tone has two cards of one suit, monotone has three, and paired repeats a rank.

## How this was computed

Method: exact enumeration. The 12 specific deals are grouped by suit pattern, each is run against all 1,712,304 boards, and both seven-card hands are scored. Equity adds half of every tie, and flop textures are tallied over the ten flops inside each board.
