# Probability of Flopping a Flush

Suited cards flop a flush 0.84% of the time, 1 in 119, and a flush draw 10.94%. Exact counts.

Two suited hole cards flop a flush 0.84% of the time, 1 in 119, and a flush draw 10.94%, 1 in 9.14. Unsuited cards cannot flop a flush at all.

- Flush on the flop: 0.84%
- Flush draw on the flop: 10.94%
- Flush by the river: 6.40%

## What is the chance of flopping a flush with suited cards?

Two suited cards leave 11 cards of that suit among 50 unseen, and a flush on the flop needs all three flop cards to be of the suit. That is C(11, 3) = 165 flops of 19,600, 0.84%, or 1 in 119. Unsuited hole cards cannot flop a flush, because five cards of one suit are needed and only the three flop cards would match.

What two suited hole cards make on the flop:

| Event | Chance | Odds | Flops out of 19,600 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| A flush (three flop cards of the suit) | 0.84% | 1 in 119 | 165 |
| A flush draw (exactly two flop cards of the suit) | 10.94% | 1 in 9.14 | 2,145 |
| One card of the suit on the flop | 41.59% | 1 in 2.40 | 8,151 |
| No card of the suit on the flop | 46.63% | 1 in 2.14 | 9,139 |

## What is the chance of flopping a flush draw?

Exactly two of the three flop cards must be of your suit: C(11, 2) x 39 = 2,145 flops, 10.94%, or 1 in 9.14. A flush draw has nine outs, and from the flop it hits by the river 34.97% of the time.

## What is the chance of a flush by the river?

With suited hole cards, the board needs at least three cards of the suit among its five. That is 6.40%, 1 in 15.6. Without a suited hand, a flush needs four or five suited board cards, which is rare enough that a board with three of one suit is the usual warning sign. A monotone flop, three cards of one suit with no regard to your hand, comes 5.18% of the time.

## Where do these numbers get used?

The chance to flop a hand is the first number in a plan. The pages below turn it into prices: what a call can cost, how many outs a draw has, and how many ways a hand can be dealt.

## How were these numbers computed?

After two hole cards are dealt, 50 cards are unseen and the flop is any 3 of them, so there are C(50, 3) = 19,600 equally likely flops. For each starting hand we deal all 19,600, classify the five cards with our hand evaluator and count. Suits are symmetric, so one combination stands for every combination of the same hand. The closed forms on this page use binomial coefficients and give the same counts.
