# Pot Odds Calculator: Equity You Need to Call

Enter the pot and the bet to see the equity a call needs, the pot odds ratio and how implied odds change the price. Free, instant and shareable.

A call needs equity of bet / (pot + 2 x bet): a pot-sized bet needs 33.33%, a two-thirds-pot bet 28.57% and a half-pot bet 25.00%. Enter the pot and the bet below to price your own call, then check it against your hand.

## The formula in words and symbols

The equity a call needs is what you pay divided by the pot you can win after you have paid. That pot is the pot before the bet, plus the bet, plus your own call.

P is the pot before the bet, B the bet, C your call, W the winnings you expect to add later, and q your equity.

- Pot after your call: T = P + B + C
- Equity needed: e = C / T
- A bet of f times the pot, called in full: e = f / (1 + 2f)
- Pot odds ratio: (P + B) to C
- With implied odds: e = C / (T + W)
- Winnings needed at equity q: W = C / q - T, never below 0

## A worked example

The pot is 100 and your opponent bets 50. You pay 50 to win 150, the pot plus the bet. The pot after your call is 200, so the call needs 50 / 200 = 25.00% equity, a price of 3 : 1.

Say you expect to win another 100 on later streets. The call then needs 50 / (200 + 100) = 16.67%.

A flush draw with nine outs on the flop reaches its card by the river 34.97% of the time, which is above the 25.00% this call needs.

- Pot before the bet: 100
- Opponent bets: 50
- Pot after your call: 200
- Equity you need: 25.00%
- Price: 3 : 1
- Equity needed with 100 more to win later: 16.67%

## Reading the price

A price of 3 : 1 means you win once for every three times you lose, so you need to win one hand in four. In general a price of r : 1 needs 1 / (r + 1) equity.

Bigger bets need more equity. A pot-size bet needs 33.33%, not 50%, because your own call is part of the pot you win.

## Common mistakes

- Leaving your own call out of the pot after the call, which makes every bet look cheaper than it is.
- Reading the bet as a share of the pot and taking that share as the equity you need.
- Counting implied odds when your opponent has no chips left to pay you with. Enter the stack to catch this.
- Rounding your equity up until the call looks right. The price is exact, and your equity is the part that needs care.

## What each bet size needs

| Bet | Equity needed | Price |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Quarter pot | 16.67% | 5 : 1 |
| One third of the pot | 20.00% | 4 : 1 |
| Two fifths of the pot | 22.22% | 3.5 : 1 |
| Half pot | 25.00% | 3 : 1 |
| Two thirds of the pot | 28.57% | 2.5 : 1 |
| Three quarters of the pot | 30.00% | 2.33 : 1 |
| Pot-size bet | 33.33% | 2 : 1 |
| 1.25 times the pot | 35.71% | 1.8 : 1 |
| 1.5 times the pot | 37.50% | 1.67 : 1 |
| 2 times the pot | 40.00% | 1.5 : 1 |
| 3 times the pot | 42.86% | 1.33 : 1 |
| 4 times the pot | 44.44% | 1.25 : 1 |

## What this assumes

- You call once and nobody raises behind you.
- Amounts are dollars or chips, up to two decimal places, with the pot counted before the bet.
- Future winnings are the amount you expect to add on later streets, entered as your own estimate.

## How this is computed

The calculator turns the numbers you type into the pot after your call, T = P + B + C, and divides your call by it. Every figure is computed in your browser the moment you type, with nothing sent anywhere, and the same formulas drive the bet-size table and the pot odds pages.

A verdict appears only when you enter your equity. It compares your equity with the equity needed to four decimal places, so 33.33 typed against a required 33.3333 reads as break-even and not as a fold. The margin is your equity minus the equity needed, in percentage points.

The winnings needed at your equity are C / q - T, floored at zero. At 0% equity no amount of future winnings closes the gap, and the result reads that in words.

## Questions

### How do I calculate pot odds?

Add the pot before the bet, the bet and your call to get the pot after your call, then divide your call by that total. With a pot of 100 and a bet of 50 the total is 200 and the call needs 25.00% equity.

### What is the difference between pot odds and implied odds?

Pot odds use only the chips already in the pot after your call. Implied odds add the winnings you expect on later streets when you hit, so they lower the equity you need. The implied figure is your estimate, so use a number you could defend.

### Does it work for bets larger than the pot?

Yes. The formula is the same at every size: your call over the pot after your call. A bet of twice the pot needs more equity than a pot-size bet, and the table on this page lists every size from a quarter of the pot to four times the pot.

### What do I enter if I cannot cover the whole bet?

Type the chips you will put in under "Your call". The price is that amount over the pot before the bet, the whole bet and your call. Add your stack and the page refuses a call larger than it.

### How accurate does my equity need to be?

The price is exact; your equity is an estimate. Estimate it against a range of hands your opponent could hold, not one hand, and compare it with the price. A margin of a few points either way is a close call.
