How equity is computed

Equity is a hand’s share of the pot if every card still to come were dealt out and the pot were split by the rules of the game. The calculator deals every board that can still come, finds each player’s best five cards out of seven, and credits the winner.

Win is the share of boards a hand wins outright. Tie is the share it splits. Equity is the win share plus its part of every split pot.

Win % = boards the hand wins outright / boards dealtTie % = boards the hand ties / boards dealtEquity % = Win % + each tied board counted as 1/k, for k players sharing the pot

Exact or estimated

When the deals to count number 3,000,000 or fewer, every one is counted and the figures are exact. Above that, the calculator deals 400,000 random boards from a generator seeded by your inputs, so the same inputs always give the same figures, and it prints the 95 percent interval beside them.

The count runs in your browser, and the link you copy holds your inputs, so the same result opens for anyone.

Ranges and random hands

A “top 20 percent” range holds the strongest hands that fit inside 20 percent of the 1,326 two-card combinations, ranked by equity against a random hand. Every combination is equally likely once the cards you have named are taken out, so a hand that your cards block counts for less.

A worked example

As Ks against Qh Qd, before the flop, with 1,712,304 boards counted:

  • As Ks wins46.02%
  • They tie0.39%
  • Qh Qd wins53.59%
  • As Ks equity46.21%
  • Qh Qd equity53.79%

Put an Ah 8d 3c flop on the same hands and As Ks reads 91.21% and Qh Qd reads 8.79%, from 990 boards. A tie gives each player a share, so equity is never lower than the win share.

Common mistakes

  • Counting a range as one hand. Against a range, a hand’s equity is an average over many opponent hands.
  • Leaving out cards you know are gone. Folded cards and cards you saw are dead cards; add them so the count is honest.
  • Reading win as equity. Ties hand each player a share, so equity is at least the win share.
  • Reading equity as a decision. It ignores bets still to come, so set it beside the price of a call.

Questions

What does equity mean in poker?

Equity is a hand’s share of the pot over every way the rest of the cards can come. A hand with 60 percent equity wins, on average, 60 percent of the pot in the long run.

Why do some results say estimated?

A count can be too large to run in full. When the deals pass 3,000,000, the calculator deals 400,000 random boards instead and shows how far each figure can be off, as a plus or minus in points. The same inputs always give the same figures.

What does a top 20 percent range hold?

The strongest starting hands that fit inside 20 percent of all two-card combinations, in order of their equity against a random hand. Pairs, suited hands and offsuit hands each count by their number of combinations: 6, 4 and 12.

Why does a tie count in equity but not in win?

A tie splits the pot, so each player holds a share of it. Win counts only the boards a hand takes outright. Equity adds the shares from split pots, which is why it is never below the win figure.

How many players and cards can I enter?

Two or three players. The board holds 0, 3, 4 or 5 cards, and up to 10 dead cards can be set aside. With two players both can hold a range. With three, only one player can hold a range or a random hand. Each card can be used once.
